IN THE ORBIT / 01
THE GREATEST · FROM RASHAD’S LETTERBOXD
Architecture, isolation, and the violence that a home can conceal.
Consciousness, constructed reality, and the possibility of waking up.
A city’s wounds, the limits of vengeance, and the work of becoming a symbol.
Identity, tenderness, and the right to become yourself.
“Le monde est à vous”The world is yours.
La Haine is one of my favorite films because it makes me sit with what exclusion, humiliation, and unchecked power do to young people. The friendship and humanity stay with me as much as the anger.
My son recently shared his film profile with me and told me he had watched La Haine. I told him it was one of my favorites, and we shared a moment of joy. We both love French cinema, but knowing he had found this film on his own made me so happy. He speaks some French, and the quote on his profile made me smile: “Le monde est à vous.” A film I love had become something we shared.
Vive la révolution !
In solidarity with students in France demanding decent learning conditions, dignity, and a voice in their future. From a father and student here in America: the world belongs to you, too.
Beyond the Frame — Original Writing on Film
Film reflections on power, memory, exploitation, technology, and human consequence.

TERMINATOR 2
The Current Remains
My mother worked at Con Ed. Electricity belonged to the world I grew up in before it became a language in my work. Now I think about what travels through a wire, what reaches a screen and what stays in a child long after the television is off.

MINORITY REPORT
The Future Has a File on You
What stays with me about Minority Report is how ordinary being watched becomes. A vision becomes a verdict before a person has done anything. The question is whether the human being can still speak, change and help write the future.

DIGGER
Even the Lights Going Out Became Normal
Digger, New Orleans, and the art of witnessing a world in decline.
The lights go out, people adjust, and the world carries on. What once would have constituted an emergency becomes another ordinary interruption.

Black presence & pioneering voices
Faith, performance, labor, and self-representation. An early record of Black lives taking up space on screen.

Machines & the spectacle of power
The factory and the dictator: two visions of what happens when human beings become subjects of a system.
Shadows, fear & hidden violence
Distorted authority, uncanny bodies, and violence beneath ordinary appearances. Fear has always had a visual language.
Directors & Themes
THE FRAME KEEPS WIDENING / 03
A constellation of films
Power, memory, family, movement, and the imagination. These groupings follow the questions that run through my work, and the different ways cinema keeps them alive.
CONSCIOUSNESS AND CONTROL
Skynet & human resistance
The Terminator (1984) · Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991) · Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines (2003) · Terminator Salvation (2009) · Terminator Genisys (2015) · Terminator: Dark Fate (2019)
The future arrives as a weapon. Across the Terminator films, survival depends on whether people can interrupt the machinery they helped create.
Systems that decide for us
Metropolis (1927) · Colossus: The Forbin Project (1970) · Westworld (1973) · WarGames (1983) · RoboCop (1987) · Minority Report (2002)
Work, policing, war, and judgment become systems. These are the questions behind my writing on authority: who builds the machine, and who carries its consequences?
Consciousness & the manufactured self
2001: A Space Odyssey (1968) · Blade Runner (1982) · Ghost in the Shell (1995) · The Matrix (1999) · A.I. Artificial Intelligence (2001) · Her (2013) · Ex Machina (2015) · Blade Runner 2049 (2017)
Memory, desire, and consciousness resist easy definitions. The human question remains even when a body, a relationship, or an entire reality has been engineered.
JAMES CAMERON
Care across the unknown
Aliens (1986) · The Abyss (1989)
Inside the spectacle are questions of care, fear, and trust. Protection becomes a human responsibility when institutions treat life as expendable.
Love under pressure
True Lies (1994) · Titanic (1997)
Secrecy and catastrophe test intimate bonds. The scale of the image matters because ordinary people still have something to lose inside it.
Land, empire & inheritance
Avatar (2009) · Avatar: The Way of Water (2022) · Avatar: Fire and Ash (2025)
Land becomes a resource to conquer; family becomes a reason to resist. These worlds meet the questions of water, empire, and inheritance in my own work.
BLACK CINEMA
Becoming & belonging
Moonlight (2016) · Pariah (2011) · Waves (2019) · Crooklyn (1994) · The Last Black Man in San Francisco (2019)
The right to become yourself, the pull of family, and the meaning of home. Black life holds tenderness and contradiction beyond what anyone expects it to represent.
Ancestry, spirit & sound
Daughters of the Dust (1991) · Eve’s Bayou (1997) · Sinners (2025)
Memory travels through families, landscapes, belief, and music. These films place the past inside the present, where it can wound, warn, and sustain.
Power & the cost of survival
Do the Right Thing (1989) · Malcolm X (1992) · Get Out (2017) · If Beale Street Could Talk (2018) · Judas and the Black Messiah (2021) · Boyz n the Hood (1991)
Neighborhoods, love, and political movements encounter the force of institutions. Survival is personal, but the conditions that demand it are never only personal.
Reclaiming the frame
Killer of Sheep (1977) · The Watermelon Woman (1996) · Black Girl (1966) · Touki Bouki (1973)
Working lives, erased histories, and the pressures of colonialism enter the frame on their own terms. The authority to tell a story is part of the struggle.
New voices / 2026
Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother (2026)
Faith, grief, and the cost of protecting a family bring another angle to fatherhood under pressure.

FRENCH CINEMA
The street & the state
La Haine (1995) · Les Misérables (2019) · Athena (2022)
Youth, humiliation, and police power turn the neighborhood into a contested world. Friendship and humanity remain visible inside the anger.
Institutions & belonging
A Prophet (2009) · Dheepan (2015) · The Class (2008)
A prison, a displaced family, a classroom: each becomes a place where people negotiate who they are allowed to be and whose voice gets heard.
Women writing their own lives
Girlhood (2014) · Divines (2016) · Portrait of a Lady on Fire (2019)
Friendship, desire, and artistic freedom open space for women to name their own lives. The gaze itself becomes a question of power.
Revolution & resistance
La Chinoise (1967) · A Grin Without a Cat (Le fond de l’air est rouge) (1977) · La Commune (Paris, 1871) (2000)
Student radicalism, collective revolt, and political memory ask how an idea becomes a movement, and how cinema preserves its contradictions.
Recent films / 2025–2026
Dossier 137 (Case 137) (2025) · Notre salut (A Man of His Time) (2026)
Police accountability and collaboration with authoritarian power bring the question of responsibility into sharp focus: what does a person defend, excuse, or help make possible?
KUBRICK
Crime & the fragile plan
Killer’s Kiss (1955) · The Killing (1956)
A carefully arranged world can unravel through desire, chance, or one human decision. Precision does not make anyone immune to consequence.
War, command & revolt
Fear and Desire (1953) · Paths of Glory (1957) · Spartacus (1960) · Dr. Strangelove (1964) · Full Metal Jacket (1987)
The language of order can conceal absurdity and cruelty. These films ask what happens to a person when obedience becomes more important than conscience.
The architecture of unease
Lolita (1962) · 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968) · A Clockwork Orange (1971) · Barry Lyndon (1975) · The Shining (1980) · Eyes Wide Shut (1999)
Desire, class, violence, and consciousness inhabit meticulously built spaces. The beauty of the frame makes its unease harder to escape.
NOLAN
Memory, obsession & perception
Following (1998) · Memento (2000) · Insomnia (2002) · The Prestige (2006)
A story changes when memory fails or obsession takes control. What someone believes about themselves can become the most dangerous part of the puzzle.
A city under pressure
Batman Begins (2005) · The Dark Knight (2008) · The Dark Knight Rises (2012)
Fear, justice, and power are fought over through a city and its symbols. The question is who gets to define protection, and what it costs.
Time, survival & responsibility
Inception (2010) · Interstellar (2014) · Dunkirk (2017) · Tenet (2020) · Oppenheimer (2023)
Time becomes an experience of grief, urgency, and consequence. Scientific ambition and human responsibility keep meeting at the edge of something irreversible.
BRUCE LEE / MARTIAL ARTS
Bruce Lee / presence & defiance
The Big Boss (1971) · Fist of Fury (1972) · The Way of the Dragon (1972) · Enter the Dragon (1973) · Game of Death (1978)
Movement carries conviction. Lee’s screen presence turns the body into an argument for dignity, self-possession, and resistance to being diminished.
Discipline & cultural memory
The 36th Chamber of Shaolin (1978) · Ip Man (2008)
Training is more than preparation for a fight. It becomes a way of carrying knowledge, preserving dignity, and deciding how strength should be used.
Choreography as storytelling
Police Story (1985) · Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000)
A body moving through space can tell a story before anyone speaks. Physical invention, restraint, and desire give action its emotional weight.
SPIELBERG
Wonder & its consequences
Jaws (1975) · Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977) · Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981) · E.T. (1982) · Jurassic Park (1993)
The unknown can invite awe or reveal human arrogance. Wonder matters here because it opens a door to responsibility, fear, and care.
History & moral choice
The Color Purple (1985) · Schindler’s List (1993) · Saving Private Ryan (1998) · Lincoln (2012)
Large histories reach us through individual lives. What people endure, defend, and decide becomes the measure of the world around them.
Being seen, being pursued
A.I. Artificial Intelligence (2001) · Minority Report (2002) · Catch Me If You Can (2002)
A created child, a predicted suspect, a shifting identity: each tests how institutions recognize a person, and what happens when recognition becomes control.
GUILLERMO DEL TORO
Childhood against brutality
The Devil’s Backbone (2001) · Pan’s Labyrinth (2006) · Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio (2022)
A child’s imagination meets war, fascism, and demands for obedience. Fantasy becomes a language for conscience when the adult world has failed it.
Monsters & the right to exist
Cronos (1993) · Hellboy (2004) · Hellboy II: The Golden Army (2008) · The Shape of Water (2017) · Frankenstein (2025)
The creature asks who deserves compassion. Humanity is measured through the treatment of the outsider, not the appearance of the body.
Gothic desire & colossal worlds
Pacific Rim (2013) · Crimson Peak (2015) · Nightmare Alley (2021)
Haunted houses, spectacle, and dangerous ambition expose what people hide from themselves. The constructed world gives those hidden forces a visible shape.
DENIS VILLENEUVE
Violence & inherited silence
Polytechnique (2009) · Incendies (2010)
Violence leaves a history that others must carry. Silence, family memory, and testimony turn the aftermath into a struggle over what can finally be spoken.
Control, dread & moral uncertainty
Prisoners (2013) · Enemy (2013) · Sicario (2015)
Certainty becomes dangerous when fear takes over. These films move through systems and private obsessions that promise control while deepening the damage.
Language, memory & empire
Arrival (2016) · Blade Runner 2049 (2017) · Dune (2021) · Dune: Part Two (2024)
Language reshapes perception; memory shapes identity; prophecy can serve power. Vast worlds still depend on intimate choices and the stories people agree to believe.

FANTASY
Other worlds, real courage
Legend (1985) · The Dark Crystal (1982) · Willow (1988) · The Princess Bride (1987)

Childhood at the threshold
The NeverEnding Story (1984) · The Witches (1990) · Labyrinth (1986) · Return to Oz (1985)
Growing up means crossing into uncertainty. These worlds give fear, imagination, and the struggle to find a way home their own geography.

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone (2001) · Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (2002) · Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (2004)

Resistance & the cost of choice / 2010–2011
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows — Part 1 (2010) · Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows — Part 2 (2011)
The friendships carry into open conflict. Courage becomes the willingness to act without certainty that the world will reward it.
