IN MY OWN WORDS
Water, service and the life I carry
I’m originally from Peekskill, New York. It’s in Westchester County, just north of New York City. My connection to water began there near the Hudson River long before I traveled the seas. Electricity was always around me, too, and I grew curious about the systems people built to carry power, information and movement. After 9/11, while still in high school, I was recruited for the Navy’s Cryptologic Technician (Interpretive), or CTI, program. I went on to serve as a boatswain’s mate and operations specialist aboard an LSD in the Gator Navy, operating alongside a Marine Expeditionary Unit during the Global War on Terror and taking the helm through the Strait of Hormuz. I trained in San Diego, where my oldest son was born at Balboa, and later lived in Pearl Harbor, where my youngest was born. My military history and my history as a father are woven together.
Losing my military career hurt deeply. It changed how I understood myself and left me grieving a future I had expected to live. Finding a way forward has taken willpower, good therapy, fatherhood and a small circle of the right people. Movement, working out and writing give me ways to work through what I carry. I keep training, traveling and using what I learned, with military mentors connected to Norfolk, Virginia Beach, San Diego and Coronado continuing to guide me. Brotherhood, strong leadership and pride in my country remain part of my life.
My love for naval vessels, the sea, and both analog and digital technology carries into my work as an artist, writer, filmmaker and founder of Echo Lion. I want to understand where things came from and honor the people who built the systems we inherit. Through sound, words and images, I explore memory, fatherhood, technology and what it takes to keep moving when your life changes direction.

A continuing practice
Rashad Houston’s work begins with lived experience: the bond between a father and his children, the weight of memory, and the effort to keep a voice intact through change. Across music, poetry, essays, film and photography, he returns to what people inherit, what they survive, and what they choose to leave behind.
Earlier recordings and writing explored love, pain, balance, vulnerability and responsibility. Those concerns continue through a widening frame. Questions about family and survival lead into questions about history, culture, spirituality and power; questions about voice become questions about authorship, ownership and human agency. His interest in artificial intelligence and superintelligence grows from that same ground: who builds the systems that shape our lives, who controls them, and what they ask us to surrender.
Sound carries rhythm and atmosphere. Writing makes room for sustained thought. Cinema and photography hold gestures, places and moments that language cannot fully recover. These are connected forms of attention within one evolving artistic practice.
Through The Weight of Light, Houston develops long-form essays on technology, humanity, cinema and the structures people create. His website gathers the work and its history, while Echo Lion provides an independent home for its production, publishing and continued exploration.
Different forms. One body of work.
The questions that remain
Fatherhood, inheritance and memory run through the work alongside movement, survival, identity and faith. Its questions reach from the intimate to the systemic: how power shapes a life, how history survives in a family, and how people retain responsibility for the tools and institutions they create. Technology enters that conversation with the human being still at its center.
Echo Lion
Founded by Rashad Houston, Echo Lion is an independent creative company working at the intersection of sound, story, technology and movement. It connects the disciplines through production, publishing and a commitment to creative ownership, giving ideas room to move between forms and endure beyond a single release.
The signal continues
The Weight of Light is the active home for long-form essays. Films, music and spoken word continue on YouTube; X holds observations and fragments; Bandcamp and SoundCloud carry recorded sound and the archive.
The medium may change. The work carries the memory forward.
